Catching Up With Gain Actor Beshoy Mehany

When you hang out with Beshoy Mehany, who will have a featured role in 2022’s Gain, you quickly notice two things: the guy is a killer dribbler, and you have to be on your toes around him, as he is a natural prankster. Beshoy laughs at both ideas. “Thanks, I think,” he responds, kicking a soccer ball around. “I’ve been playing since I was a kid, so I’ve had plenty of practice. As for the pranks, well, that’s my sense of humor. Life is too short – we all need to just enjoy it a lot more.”

Beshoy, who was born on January 7, 1992, and is 29, is doing his part to make that happen. His prank videos, which have received millions of views, have garnered him a loyal following. Viewers and “victims” alike admire Beshoy’s ability to convincingly assume any role, be it a supervisor or upset customer, and reveal his real identity just at the right time, to the amusement of everyone involved. It is these performances that have attracted the attention of movie producers, leading to his role in Gain.

“My career is kicking up a level,” Beshoy acknowledges, “and it’s everything I dreamed of when I was nine years old and got interested in acting. My father had recently died, and I probably saw acting as a way to escape a little from the pain. I was also really interested in all the lights and cameras and in working with other actors to create a scene. It’s definitely the right profession for me.”

Beshoy continues by saying that at his Jersey City high school, he was fascinated by the world of theater. “I had a great time with this, in part because I thrived under the pressure. There are no do-overs in a play. You either get it right or you don’t. I loved that challenge and worked hard to deliver my lines right the first time.”

It was clear Beshoy had found his passion, and he was ambitious enough to want to go all the way and be a professional actor. “I faced a big problem, though: money and connections,” he remembers. “Without one, you can’t buy any of the equipment you need in order to make videos. Without the other, you’ll see very few – if any – doors open.”

What Beshoy did have, though, was the support of his parents. “I really was very fortunate to have them in my life,” he believes. “So many actors go it alone because their families think acting is not a ‘real’ profession. That wasn’t the case with my mom and dad. They saw my talent and encouraged me to pursue my dream no matter how difficult it might get.”

Beshoy caught his first big break when he was only eighteen years old. “I tried out for this cool reality show called Bear Swamp Recovery,” he says. “I gave my audition everything I had and waited on pins and needles to see if I would be selected. When I got the role, I floated along for days on cloud nine. I just knew this was the start of something bigger.”

Beshoy worked hard for the TV show and learned so much from its crew and his fellow actors that he left the show convinced that acting would be the only career for him. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, honestly. When I enrolled at New Jersey Institute of Technology, I started taking all these acting courses even though they wouldn’t count towards my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. I simply had to learn everything I could to become a better actor.”

In 2019, Beshoy became more strategic about his career path and decided to begin making prank videos that would be shared across social media platforms. “I knew that Hollywood is an extremely competitive industry,” he explains. “I needed to get my name out there so that a production company would notice me, so I began to put out a lot of content so I could show them what I can do. My videos received millions of hits on different platforms. I also worked as an extra in a lot of TV shows and movies to get more experience, always knowing that I was one step away from getting the one chance I was looking for.”

His strategy paid off. Beshoy was offered a featured role in Gain, and he jumped at the chance to act in a major movie. “I am so incredibly excited to be doing this,” he reveals, smiling. “Just like any actor, I may have had to put in several years of hard work to get here, and I have received more rejections than I care to remember, but it’s all been worth it. I am going to keep going forward and have faith that the next door will open at exactly the right time. And the next one. And the next one after that. By working hard and staying positive, I will get to where I want to be in the movie industry.”

Beshoy is reflective as he thinks about where he has come from and where he’s going in the movie industry. “I won’t lie – Hollywood is tough! At the same time, however, isn’t that part of what makes it so much fun? I have to give my utmost everytime I act and let loose my creativity. It’s a profession that demands a lot from me, but I am blessed to be able to help people to laugh, escape reality for a few hours, and just have a good time.”
