Ishan Shivanand and YOI Free Your Mind From Toxic Thoughts

Ishan Shivanand, a monk from India who founded Yoga Of Immortals (YOI), has spent over six years traveling the world to bring the healing power of a 5,000-year-old tradition to hurting people. “I have had the pleasure of teaching YOI to all kinds of people,” he says, “including prime ministers, school children, CEOs, and medical professionals. One of my favorite memories is of a man I helped in Central Park in New York City. The one hour I spent with him reaffirmed to me why my mission is so important and can change lives for the better.”

Ishan was walking through Central Park one morning when he spotted an older man sitting alone on a park bench. “He was about 60 years old,” he recalls, “and something about his countenance just spoke to me. It was a gorgeous day, but I could see that this man was surrounded by inner turmoil.”

Ishan introduced himself to the man, whose name was David. The two started talking, and before long, David was telling him about why he was so upset: his mother, whom he hadn’t seen in years, had recently called him, wanting to reconnect.

“David’s mother had actually been very abusive, and he had terrible memories of his childhood,” Ishan says. “David thought he had resolved his issues, but hearing her voice brought everything up again. Ever since that phone call, the pain in his heart had been constant, and he simply didn’t know what to do with that agony. He didn’t know how to stop reliving the memories of when she had abused him.”

Abuse, Ishan continues, can leave a person trying to resolve past injustices years after they occurred. “The victim has many unresolved thoughts and emotions from when a person did something bad to them. The pain stemming from the action is just once, but suffering is eternal because the victim relives that incident so many times.”

Ishan spent some time talking with David, hearing more about his story and helping him to see some of the options he had, including counseling. “I do believe that a good counselor can help a person work through emotional pain,” he says. “However, the ancient yogic techniques used by YOI are also excellent tools, and I asked David if he had a few minutes for me to help him to try them.”

David was willing, so right there in the middle of Central Park, Ishan guided David through a simple meditative exercise designed to help him to calm his mind and ease his anxiety. “YOI focuses on the breathing of the practitioner and on their self-awareness. I instructed David to breathe slowly and deeply and helped him to visualize pushing all anxious thoughts out of the top of his head.”

At the end of the impromptu session, the two men discussed David’s experience. “He said that while the memories of his mother were still present, it seemed like there was a foot of space between them and his mind,” Ishan says. “In only a few minutes, he had created an oasis, basically, that allowed his mind to calm down and to stop endlessly reliving the memories. I was glad to hear that he felt less anxious and overwhelmed.”

YOI, Ishan believes, has the ability to help people who are plagued by memories of abuse to be free of them. “So often, we feel as if we cannot control the thoughts that go through our mind and that we are, in effect, at their mercy,” he states. “YOI is empowering because as you practice it each day, you gradually learn that it is actually the other way around: we are in control of our thoughts, and we have the ability to choose which ones we will think about and which ones we will let go of.”

Ishan emphasizes that YOI is not a quick fix. “A painful memory will not lose its power overnight,” he says. “However, if you are diligent and committed to practicing YOI’s Vedic modalities each day, you will over time see its hold on you dissipate. You will achieve mental separation from that memory, clearing the path to true inner peace.”

Through the scientifically-backed meditation techniques taught by Ishan Shivanand and Yoga of Immortals, millions are finding relief from anxiety, anger, addictions, and other issues.
