Before 2021, per National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility rules, student athletes at colleges and universities weren’t allowed to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). While their hard work, performance, and popularity often created a marketable brand, they didn’t see a dime of it outside of sponsorships. That has remained unchanged for over a century. 

However, the Supreme Court has since ruled that the NCAA can no longer limit education-related payments to student athletes, meaning that student athletes can now accept endorsement deals, branded promotions, local advertisement partnerships, and more.
