L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z.: Hardcore Hip Hop with a Universal Approach to Perspectives
Sitting down with music producer and artist L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z. (Life Eternal Everlasting Makes Accurate Judgements About The End) makes for one chilled out afternoon. As I sit across from him in his Washington D.C. office, he asks me what I like to listen to. When I admit that I’m an 80s music buff, he laughs and tells me that music has evolved since then. “The 80s had some good stuff,” he admits, “but these days the sound is better. That’s especially true with hip hop. I love this genre because it’s got so much love, power, style, compassion, and intelligence. As an artist, I bring all of that into my work and try to give the listener the ultimate experience in music.”
L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z. is clearly devoted to his work and has been described as a timeless artist with good reason. Part of his style comes from the Bronx, where he was born, and from Hollis Queens, New York, where he was raised. “That was an incredible place to grow up,” L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z. remembers. “I absorbed the environment around me, and that helped me to become who I am today: a turntablist, emcee, producer, writer, videographer, avid reader, and truth seeker. I try to incorporate this into my music, and the result is a sound you’re not going to get from any other artist.”
Word has gotten out about L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z., and he now works with artists around the world, including from Australia as well as America. I ask him why it’s so important to him to connect with international artists.
That makes him pause for a moment before he answers. “Music connects all of us together, and it has the potential to transcend cultures and differences. With that in mind, I have reached far and wide to connect all genres of music under the umbrella of the sound of humanistic thump. My music is love in search of a word. In this day and age of disagreements and discord, I offer my hip hop music that has a universal approach to perspectives. It is distinctive, and you’ll immediately connect with my music when you hear it.”
These days, L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z. is working on numerous projects. “I’ve got some new songs in the works,” he reveals. “It’s going to take hip hop even further and connect with the deepest parts of the human spirit. I’m also teaming with the incomparable style of the well-known Eddie ‘DJ Flip’ Neam. That guy knows a lot about the production of music, so coming alongside him has been pretty exciting. I am adding the wisdom I learn from Eddie’s ever-evolving spirit to my own creation path.”
As our interview ends and we wrap up our conversation, I ask L.E.E. M.A.J.A.Z. one final question: what does he want his music to accomplish?
“I want it to resonate with the deepest parts of the human soul,” he responds, “and to make people look at each other differently. To ease the animosity that we see so often in society. If my music does that, I know I will have accomplished what I have set out to do with my work.”
