Dr. Kamala Maddali on Artificial Intelligence, Precision Medicine, and the Future of Healthcare
Advancements in the global technological landscape often bring about improvements in a wide variety of industries, most notably the medical field. Now, two recent advancements in healthcare have the potential to completely reshape the industry once again: artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine. Dr. Kamala Maddali, renowned clinician-scientist and vocal proponent for these advancements, believes that “we must raise awareness about the potential of artificial intelligence and precision medicine to improve healthcare globally.”
A Decorated Career in the Medical Field
Dr. Kamala Maddali, DVM, Ph.D. is an accomplished clinician-scientist and healthcare innovator. Over the course of her professional career, she has come to recognize the prodigious potential of precision medicine and artificial intelligence, and she’s excited to share the benefits that she’s discovered with the world. Kamala is now an outspoken advocate for the implementation of these advancements in the medical and life sciences field.
The Power of Precision Medicine
For the uninitiated, Kamala provides a brief introduction on precision medicine. “Precision medicine is an emerging field that is coming to the forefront of contemporary cancer treatment. This allows providers to tailor a patient’s treatment to suit his or her genes, environment, and lifestyle. This approach is leading to significant advances in treating rare diseases, as well as neurology and immune-related disorders.
Not only does she consider precision medicine to be one of the most exciting developments in healthcare, but she also finds it personally meaningful as a rare disease patient. I draw inspiration from a moment in history that took place in Philadelphia, where I live: the launch of the Cancer Moonshot project five years ago from the University of Pennsylvania, which links President Biden to Philadelphia. She explains how the Cancer Moonshot project has helped transform precision medicine in cancer treatment. After the project was launched, federal funding for cancer research exploded. Now, new treatments are saving lives every day as a result.
Learning About the Body (and How to Care For It)
Throughout her research journey, Kamala and other researchers, scientists, and clinicians have discovered how truly complex the human body is. “At this time, we are experiencing a period of rapid development of our own bodies’ intelligence. We must adopt ways to better understand our bodies, adapt, and develop new treatments and tests for more people in the community in order to reduce healthcare disparities.” Kamala points to one of the ways that artificial intelligence can aid in this mission, stating that “Artificial Intelligence is able to assist many people, physicians, and health systems in this regard. Utilizing AI processes enables access to information in a timely manner.”
The Exciting Applications and Untold Advantages of AI
As Kamala explains, “AI is accelerating our intelligence together so that we can improve our health in the future.” She points out that rapid innovations in AI are proving useful in a wide variety of applications, including disease diagnosis, robotics-assisted surgery, predicting new treatments, automation of various medical applications, matching patients with cutting edge clinical trials, and most recently, the diagnosis of COVID-19.
No Longer Artificial: The Future of AI
As of today, AI still has a long way to come, but Kamala sees an exciting future for this technology on the horizon. “We’re only just beginning to discover the full potential of AI. When we all collaborate with our professional abilities and unique perceptions, AI will no longer be thought of as Artificial, but instead:
- authentic
- audacious
- augmentative
- accelerative
- and auspicious
As our 5 fingers make our hand uniquely functional, these advancements will reshape the way we think about AI.”
With so many advancements and solutions arising, Kamala looks to the future of the industry with pride and optimism. “I’m truly excited to see what the future holds for the medical field. I know that these innovations are going to contribute to a very bright future for healthcare.” Let us collaborate and innovate to bring hope to patients through science and innovation.
